HARP is a small mixed choir which performs in Victorian
costume in North Yorkshire.
The choir, made up of a dozen experienced singers, originally came together to
raise
money for charity at Christmas 1998. We sang carols in pubs, clubs and
restaurants and
to after-dinner audiences.
We do Victorian
parlour songs, ballads and part songs (e.g. "Sweet and Low",
"Love's Old Sweet
Song" and "The Lost Chord") as well as some Gilbert and Sullivan.
We also do modern arrangements of Bach and Handel, together with folk songs,
spirituals and part songs, as well as arrangements of
Lennon and McCartney, Cole Porter and Henry
Mancini. Most of the time we sing 'a capella'.
We take our singing seriously but not ourselves - our aim is to entertain.
We
are delighted to receive invitations to sing. We are particularly committed to
singing in residential homes for elderly people. We understand that the Victorian costumes
and music can stimulate recollections of bygone years.
Many elderly people
cannot travel to concerts, so we go to them.
The choir members all have proven musical skills.
We have received a grant from the New Horizons charitable trust to
buy
music and a portable keyboard. We are grateful to the Trust for
helping us to
put our singing on a sound footing.
In August 2006 we made our TV debut in the popular Tyne
Tees TV programme
'Dales Diary'.
